Chris Newbrook

Chris Newbrook studied Fine Art at the University of Northumbria and has been painting seriously for the past 15 years. After working and exhibiting in southwest London he relocated to Kent and now has his studio based in Rochester. In 2003 he won an important art competition, The Dover Prize, which was an open competition involving 400 professional and amateur painters. This influenced his decision to become a full-time artist. Chris likes to explore a wide range of subject matter, including cityscapes and portraiture. When he paints a cityscape it is often informed by his experience of the city. The way it can feel familiar, yet always changing and revealing new intimate spaces between architectural monoliths. For him the best way to experience an intimacy with the city is during sunset or at night, when it reveals itself in an abstract display of atmospheric light and form. He wants to seduce the viewer by creating familiar features to evoke an emotive response, then for their eye to be drawn into its layers and its greater theatrical mystery. Chris has exhibited and sold his work locally and international and corporate clients have also bought his paintings, including private collectors from the USA, Hong Kong and Europe.
